Several Pro Pakatan Rakyat Facebook Pages were inaccessible from Malaysia since yesterday afternoon. The blocked Facebook Pages include “We fully support <PKR> DAP”, “Zhong Zheng Express” and “We fully support BN to be buried”. All three are Chinese Facebook Pages. The total likes for these Facebook Pages exceed 700k. However users who were overseas have no problem in accessing these Facebook Pages.

Based on my understanding, these Facebook Pages can continue to update their contents and can be accessed from overseas, only Malaysian users are being blocked from accessing the Facebook Pages.

The Minister of Communication and Multimedia, Ahmad Shabery Cheek must immediately clarify if he ordered the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to censor these Pro Pakatan Rakyat Facebok Pages which resulted them to be inaccessible from Malaysia. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) must explain the role that MCMC play in the censorship of Pro Pakatan Rakyat Facebook Pages in Malaysia.

Najib must also publicly address if the directive of blocking the Pro Pakatan Rakyat Facebook Page come from him. If not, he must immediately interfere and stop this censorship. Internet filtering is a violation of the Multimedia Super Corridor Malaysia Bill of Guarantees which specifically states that the Government would “ensure no internet censorship”. Is Najib prepared to go against the promise of no internet filtering by stopping Malaysians from accessing Pro Pakatan Rakyat Facebook Pages?

Najib’s high-handed suppression of freedom of information shows that his administration has lost touch with the ground by censoring Malaysians’ access to free political information and news.

Is this the start of a total crackdown on Facebook where more Pro Pakatan Rakyat Facebook Pages will be shutdown?
